“Where the Horse Comes First”

Moutonshoek comprises 950ha in the fertile Moutonshoek Valley, northwest of the town Piketberg on the Western Cape’s West Coast.  This is proven horse country and many a fine horse has been produced in this valley and immediate surrounds.

Moutonshoek has large paddocks on limestone-rich soil.  The equine athletes play, run and grow up strong with good bone.  Oats, lucerne and teff for own consumption is produced on the farm.  Table grapes and citrus for export, as well as beef is also produced here.

Their first horses were sold at the National Yearling Sale in 2006.  Each of their first two tiny crops to race produced a STAKES PERFORMER (14% stakes performers to foals born).

MOUTONSHOEK is the passion of Chris Gerber, a Johannesburg businessman, and Dr Bennie van der Merwe, veterinarian.  Chris is a dyed-in-the-wool racing man and a director of the Racing Association.  Bennie has worked with thoroughbreds for his entire professional life.

Horse manager Karel Skirmaans has been involved with breeding thoroughbreds his whole life, cutting his teeth under the tutelage of the legendary John Kramer.  Boon Boonzaaier is the General Manager and is assisted by twelve staff in the horse section

There are currently 55 broodmares on the farm.  Moutonshoek welcomes visitors to this most beautiful valley.
