Midlands Thoroughbreds

Manny and Mandy Testa are the founders of Midlands Thoroughbreds. Having acquired the KZN Midlands Resort, Midlands Saddle & Trout, in 1999 they unknowingly became horse owners through this acquisition.

Manny and Mandy have since bought the farm next door to Midlands Saddle & Trout, ex "Burwell Stud" to improve and grow their breeding operation. The farm is 312 hectares with 30 weanling/yearling boxes, 32 standard boxes for spelling and 15 foaling boxes, with three stallion boxes and their own Kikuyu camps. They currently have 17 of their own broodmares.

Manny says of Midlands Thoroughbreds: "Our breeding philosophy is to try and enhance our female lines as much as we can. I follow the breeding insights of Fredrico Tesio closely but lately have started looking at “nicks” and outcrosses. My latest reference has been the book “Designing Speed in the Racehorse ” by Ken McLean. As I am passionate about the genetics of Thoroughbreds I am happy to help any prospective client with pedigree analysis and Stallion selection for their mare/s."

  • They produced their first crop in 2004: three foals, one of which won a race (Brave Damascus) and the other
         two were unplaced.
  • In 2005 they produced 2 foals: One of them was Castanelli who is their first prolific horse. He has won four races
         and placed over 25 times.
  • In 2006 three foals were produced - all by Bezrin - Filly Bushwacker, Detzkey's Darling and Cale's Luck who was
unplaced. This was a great crop as Detzkey's Darling has also done well with 17 runs / 5 wins / 6 places. She has
         earned R233 375 in stakes.
  • In 2007 they produced four foals; two by Bezrin and one by Woodborough, the other by Copperbelt. Double Date
is the only one still racing and she races in their colours. She has already won and run some good places in strong
         graduation plates.
  • In 2008 they produced five foals. One didn't get to the track and the others are unraced three year olds.
Black Arrow has had two starts.
  • In 2009 they produced 10 foals. One was sold to Paul Matchet, one to Gavin Smith and one to Brian Wiid while
seven were retained, all in pre-training, due to join their racing yard soon.
  • In 2012 13 foals were produced. 10 will be offered on the KZN Yearling Sale and three on the National Two Year
         Old sale this year.
  • Manny Testa says they have a big string of racehorses: "Our policy will be to offer every horse we breed to the public. Those that we don't sell at auction we will race ourselves. This will allow us to prove our mares and purchase new bloodlines for the breeding operation as we go. We will be actively marketing the facility and would love to work with like-minded breeders to get the most out of this exciting business.

"Chris Erasmus trains our horses, and he has been training racehorses since 1972. Starting out as an assistant trainer for Koos Van Jaarsveldt and then getting his own license in 1975. After getting his license he moved to Newmarket in 1983 and started building up his business. His fondest memory of those days was winning the Bloemfontein trainers championships in 1989 with the help of Pierre Strydom who still rides for Chris today. Since moving to Turffontein in 2003 Chris has attracted many owners. He has also been entrusted with many Breeders' prized bloodlines when they have leased fillies to him to race and send back after their racing careers."
