QUALITY ABOUNDS IN VARSFONTEIN NATIONAL DRAFT
20 April 2018

Perennial leading breeders Varsfontein Stud has another exceptional draft on offer at the 2018 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale, which takes place at the TBA complex next week.

The farm will be represented by yearlings by such standout sires as Captain Al, Dynasty, Flower Alley, Silvano, Var and What A Winter.

Varsfontein’s own successful sires Gimmethegreenlight and Judpot are also represented in the draft, as the Varsfontein based sire sensation Master Of My Fate.
The draft is also notably for the high-quality of mare represented, with Varsfontein’s National Sale draft including yearlings from some of the best families in the South African stud book.

Deceased champion sire Captain Al has two impressive lots on sale –his son Captain Flinders (Lot 178) is a half-brother to this season’s high class three-year-old Pietro Mascagni and bred on the same cross as G1 winners Carry On Alice and Tap O’ Noth, while Captain Al colt Only One Like You (Lot 181), a full-brother to G3 winner Captain Splendid, is out of a stakes winning Fort Wood half-sister to hugely promising sire Master Of My Fate.

Master Of My Fate himself has six in the draft (one offered by Varsfontein as agent), including a colt out of a stakes winning sister to multiple G1 winner Snowdance (Lot 67), and a ¾ brother (Lot 230) to exported G1 Champions Cup winner Master Plan (a son of Master Of My Fate’s sire Jet Master).

Another leading young sire based at Varsfontein Stud is G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate winner Gimmethegreenlight. The latter has nine in the draft, including a full-brother to G2 winner and recent scorer Hack Green (Lot 27), a filly out of a half-sister to champion Kochka (Lot 110), a full-brother to star 3yo Surcharge (Lot 124), a filly out of champion sprinter Choisir’s G3 Flamboyant Stakes runner up Goldie Coast (Lot 159) and a filly out of Equus Champion Night Diva (Lot 218).

One lot guaranteed to attract attention is Track Attack (Lot 191). The colt is a son of four times Equus Outstanding Stallion Dynasty and he is a half-brother to exported Equus Champion and multiple G1 winner Yorker.

Champion Sire of 2YOs Var has a pair of colts in the draft –Var And Away (Lot 88) being produced by a winning half-sister to G1 winner Fair Maiden, while Eden Roc (Lot 59) is out of the Captain Al sired G2 Fillies Championship winner Townsend. The latter, in turn, is a half-sister to G1 Champions Challenge winner Regal Ransom.

Other intriguing lots in this draft include the Judpot filly (Lot 94) out of SA Oaks winner Arcola, the Silvano half-brother (Lot 185) to G3 performer Kiss Me Hardy, and the Flower Alley half-sister to East Cape star Queen Forever.
