Bloodstock South Africa purchase Surcharge showed his class in no uncertain terms, when storming home to land the G1 Daily News 2000 at Greyville on Saturday.
Trained by Stuart Pettigrew, the Varsfontein Stud bred 3yo powered home from off the pace to post a three parts of a length win in the 2000m feature under jockey Grunter Wrogemann.

Owned by Ian van Schalkwyk, Surcharge was picking up the first G1 victory of his career, and his six career win over all.
His victory in the 2018 Daily News 2000 took Surcharge’s career earnings to R2 273 375 and he also picked up a BSA added value bonus of R154 000.

The colt had previously finished second in all of the G1 SA Derby, G1 SA Classic and G2 Gauteng Guineas, with his previous scores having included the G3 Tony Ruffel and Listed Secretariat Stakes.
The winning trainer said after the win, ““Ian is over the moon, he is really happy. He’s now had four hard runs in a row and we’re not going to push him into the July, which would include another eight-hour trip on a float. We’re putting him away for a deserved rest, he’s only three, still a big baby and will return better and stronger at four.”
A R200 000 buy from the 2016 National Yearling Sale, Surcharge is a son of Gimmethegreenlight and the placed Diktat mare Congestion Charge. A full-brother to Surcharge, Convexity, fetched R525 000 at the 2018 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.

Surcharge’s outstanding young sire Gimmethegreenlight, who stands at Varsfontein, will be strongly represented at the 2018 KZN Yearling Sale next month.

Gimmethegreenlight’s eight strong KZN draft includes a half-brother to 8 time stakes winner Red Flyer (Lot 4), a colt out of a stakes placed daughter of champion sire Trippi (Lot 19), a colt out of a G3 placed daughter of outstanding sire and broodmare sire Encosta De Lago (Lot 236) and a filly whose stakes placed dam is a half-sister to Summer Cup winner Flirtation (Lot 239).
