With the 2018 KZN Yearling Sale set to be held on July 5th and 6th, the always popular auction received a timely boost when a former KZN Sale buy captured the G2 Post Merchants at Greyville on Friday night.

Sniper Shot, who was a R140 000 buy from the 2016 KZN Sibaya Yearling Sale, picked up the first graded victory of his career when downing some of South Africa’s best sprinters over 1200m.
One of two winners on the night for jockey Keagan De Melo, the 3yo gelding strutted his stuff when running out a half-length winner of the R400 000 feature.

Sniper Shot, who is trained by part-owner Paul Lafferty (he owns the gelding with Messrs Van Wyk and Currie), pushed his earnings over R800 000 with his win in the 2018 Post Merchants.

His win was all the more meritorious as Sniper Shot, runner up previously in both the G2 Daisy Guineas and G3 Byerley Turk, had suffered an interrupted prep for the race after pulling a muscle.

The son of Judpot and Rich Man’s Gold mare Seven Veils was bred by the Birch Bros, who have an attractive draft of five yearlings at the upcoming KZN Yearling Sale. The Birch Bros draft includes a full-brother to recent Strelitzia Stakes winner Inverroche, as well as yearlings by such popular stallions as Jackson and Querari.

Sniper Shot’s sire Judpot, also responsible for G1 winners Along Came Polly, Coral Fever, Forest Indigo and Juxtapose, has three yearlings on offer at next month’s KZN Sale.
