Bloodstock South Africa’s November Mixed Sale, due to be held after the Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale at the TBA Complex on November 4th, offers discerning buyers plenty of exciting long term opportunities.
One of the notable aspects is that the Chinese owned company Hartley SA (Pty) Ltd will be offering eight lots on the auction, with the Hartley SA draft made up of its older horses in training and unraced two-year-olds.
Their draft includes the very talented 3 x winning sprinter Brigtnumbereight, the promising Grey's Inn gelding, Hartleytwo, "Ready To Run" unraced three- year-olds by Eightfold Path and Silvano as well as unraced two-year-olds by the likes of Eightfold Path and Visionaire, with the latter responsible for a half-brother to Gr.1 Computaform Sprint winner Noble Heir (Lot 32) on the Mixed Sale.
The company’s representative Peter Gibson commented on the draft, “Harley SA has taken a policy decision to release its older males - colts, geldings, unraced and in training in order to focus on our breeding operation. It is a South African company but Chinese owned and shares the same vision as so many SA breeders who wish to access the foreign markets, in particular those in Asia. We have invested in well bred fillies in recent years and in the current market, need to make space for new blood by dispersing our male horses in training.”
A number of Harley SA’s Mixed Sale entries qualify for various BSA and CTS incentives, with the horses qualifying for the aforementioned incentives as follows:
LOT 27 / Stable A15 – HARTLEYSEVEN 3yr old chestnut gelding by Eightfold Path **BSA Valued Added Stakes**
LOT 28 / Stable A16 – HARTLEYTWO 3yr old brown gelding by Grey’s Inn **CTS Millions**
LOT 32 / Stable A11 – ’16 IRISH HONOUR 2yr chestnut colt by Visionaire **BSA Valued Added Stakes + KZN Million Sales Race**
Jane Thomas' Far End Stables will be managing the Hartley SA draft at the TBA Sales Complex.
Hartley SA are the majority shareholders of the blue blooded stallion Eightfold Path, whose sire and dam (Giant’s Causeway and Divine Proportions) won an impressive 10 Gr.1 races between them. Peter feels that the Gr.3 Prix Eclipse winner’s pedigree has not been fully appreciated by the market thus far, saying, “He is from a tremendous family, with top sires up close on both sides of his pedigree. Whipper (a ¾ brother to Eightfold Path’s dam) has enjoyed a wonderful season in 2018 with his runners including dual Gr.1 winner Recoletos as well as brilliant miler and Gr.1 Queen Anne Stakes runner up Lord Glitters. Further down on the page are the outstanding sires Shirley Heights and Pentire, further underlining the excellence of Eightfold Path’s pedigree page. It should not be forgotten that Eightfold Path ran two lengths off Siyouni on his second start at 2yrs – now one of Europe’s hottest sires.”
Despite limited opportunities at stud thus far, Eightfold Path has proven more than capable of producing high class runners, with his early representatives including talented Gr.1 G-Bets Gauteng Summer Cup entrant The Rising Legend, the stakes placed 3yo Born A Bully, and the very smart Brigtnumbereight. The latter, catalogued as Lot 17, looks an extremely exciting prospect at this year’s Mixed Sale and is sure to prove popular with buyers!

From limited opportunities, Eightfold Path is very high up (tenth at the time of writing) on this season’s Leading Sires by Average Earnings Per Runner list, with his runners’ earnings ranking higher than such top class stallions as Var, Gimmethegreenlight and multiple champion sire Silvano.
By a triple G1 US champion sire in Giant’s Causeway (whose sire sons include the outstanding Shamardal), out of a once beaten French champion Divine Proportions, the blue blooded Eightfold Path looks on the up and is a sire to watch for the future.
