HAWWAAM BLOWS RIVALS AWAY IN CHAMPIONS CHALLENGE WIN
6 May 2019

Brilliant three-year-old, and former Bloodstock South Africa purchase, Hawwaam, showed his considerable class when romping home to win Saturday’s G1 The Premier’s Champions Challenge as he liked.

Dispatched the 3-7 for Turffontein's R4 000 000 Champions Challenge, the handsome bay raced just off the pace early on, before being unleashed by jockey Anton Marcus 400m out. The Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum owned Hawwaam went on to romp home by four lengths, leaving talented, graded stakes winning older rivals Cascapedia and Divine Odyssey struggling in his wake, with fellow BSA graduate, and former dual Horse Of The Year, Legal Eagle taking fourth spot.

Trained by Mike de Kock, Hawwaam was a R1 000 000 buy from the 2017 National Yearling Sale.

A son of multiple champion sire Silvano, Hawwaam’s latest win took his tally of wins to five from just six starts and his earnings to R4 378 125, with his previous wins including the G1 SA Classic, G2 Dingaans and G3 Tony Ruffel Stakes.

Out of G3 Prix du Cap winner Halfway To Heaven, Hawwaam is a half-brother to 2019 G1 Sun Met winner Rainbow Bridge (a R300 000 buy from the 2016 National Yearling Sale), who ran a smashing second in Friday night’s G2 The Independent On Saturday Drill Hall Stakes on his first start at Greyville.

Next Bloodstock South Africa auction to take place will be the 2019 Cape Mare & Weanling Sale, which will be held at the Mistico Equestrian Centre on May 21st.
