Rennie Price’s Wicklow Stud will be offering just a single lot at the 2019 Emperors Palace National 2YO Sale, but this colt has claims to being one of the best bred lots in the entire catalogue!

Wicklow’s sole offering at the 2YO Sale this year is a colt (Lot 367) by ill-fated Equus Champion Soft Falling Rain –whose first two-year-olds made a big splash last season.
The former G1 SA Nursery winner ended 2018-2019 as South Africa’s third Leading First Crop Sire by stakes, with Soft Falling Rain’s first crop headed by G2 Gagasi Fm Debutante Stakes winner Montreal Mist and G3 Pretty Polly/Listed Ruffian Stakes runner up Gin Fizz.

Soft Falling Rain’s son out of Tagine (whose sire Strike Smartly hails from the same family as Soft Falling Rain himself) is a colt with a real stallion’s pedigree.
A half-brother to 2 winners including the stakes placed Souk (herself dam of the promising Athalia), the colt on offer is out of a full-sister to G1 SA Derby winner Bouquet-Garni, and his dual winning granddam is a full-sister to dual G3 Yellowwood Handicap winner Queen’s Bay.

Also from the same female line as smart performers and sires Announce and Sarge (both of whom, like Soft Falling Rain himself, were sired by National Assembly),  this colt is also from the immediate family of Australian G1 winners Ace High and Diatribe, and he traces back directly in female line to none other than legendary broodmare Natalma –the dam of breed shaping champion sire Northern Dancer and ancestress of fellow outstanding sires Danehill and Machiavellian.

Other top performers from this female line include champions Bago, Coup De Genie, and Denebola, French Oaks winner Senga, and dual G1 winner Maxios –the sire of recent German Oaks winner Diamanta.
