One of the Cape’s most consistent sources of high-class racehorses, Riverton Stud, have been basking in the success of the Riverton bred gelding Astrix.
The latter, a bargain R60 000 buy from the 2018 Cape Yearling Sale, took his earnings to over R1.9 million when he downed a star-studded field to win this season’s G1 TAB The Premier’s Champions Challenge at Turffontein earlier in the season.
Astrix, who holds an entry for the 2022 G1 Hollywoodbets Durban July, was subsequently named Highveld Racing’s Champion Middle Distance Horse for the past Highveld racing season at an awards ceremony in May.
Riverton Stud, who are also the breeders of this season’s Listed East Cape Fillies Nursery/Listed Lady’s Slipper Stakes winner Chere For Me, is also no stranger to selling top-class racehorses at the KZN Yearling Sale, with Riverton selling subsequent star filly Same Jurisdiction for R270 000 at the 2013 Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale. The best filly sired by Mambo In Seattle, Same Jurisdiction went on to earn over R2.253 million in prize money, and was victorious in both the 2014 G1 Thekwini Stakes and G1 2015 Jonsson Workwear Garden Province Stakes.
Riverton also consigned subsequent G1 Mercury Sprint winner Pearl Of Asia to the 2018 KZN Sale where he was knocked down to Robbie Hill for just R35 000 (Pearl Of Asia has already earned more than R600 000 in prize money!)
The Robertson farm will be bringing another quality string to the 2022 KZN Sale, with Riverton’s draft made up of yearlings sired by the Riverton bred champion Captain Of All, as well as the likes of Noble Tune, Pomodoro, Twice Over and William Longsword.
Likely standouts in this consignment include the Pomodoro colt (Lot 32), whose granddam is a half-sister to Australian five time G1 winner Boban, the William Longsword filly (Lot 47) whose dam is a half-sister to the G3 winning dam of current top-class filly Kailene, and the Twice Over filly (Lot 101) out of a stakes placed full-sister to G1 Computaform Sprint victress Noble Heir.
