Few if any breeders currently operating in South Africa have a more impressive record than the Birch Bros.
Birch Bros at one stage dominated thoroughbred breeding in South Africa to such an extent that they won some 40 championships in succession, with Birch Bros bred champions including such legends as Lenin, Sea Cottage, Wolf Power, Colorado King, and Bold Tropic, to name but a few.
Colin Birch is hoping that his National Yearling Sale draft this year will unveil more champions, with the Birch Bros set to offer yearlings by such notable stallions as Danon Platina, Futura, Master Of My Fate, Querari, and resident sire Red Ray. The latter enjoyed more feature race success when his speedy daughter Alula’s Star won the G3 Sycamore Sprint at Turffontein.
Japanese champion Danon Platina has a potential standout colt (Lot 322) out of G3 Strelitzia Stakes winner Inverroche. Colin says of the striking colt, “He is a very nice colt. His dam has already produced a really nice Gimmethegreenlight filly, and this is a very nice, strong, good-looking colt. He looks like a racehorse!”
This draft also includes a Master Of My Fate half-sister (Lot 92) to G1 Gold Medallion runner up Now I Got You, of whom Colin says “she is a very nice, scopey type of filly. Her dam has a 100% strike rate of runners to winners and hopefully this filly can add to her dam’s record.”
He is also keen on the Futura half-sister (Lot 70) to G2 Post Merchants winner Sniper Shot, who also looks a very smart prospect and is a filly who already has plenty of paddock value.
