Bloodstock South Africa graduates had a big day on Saturday, when they picked up four graded stakes races at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth.
Star of the show was rising star Eight On Eighteen, with that three-year-old running out a very impressive winner of the day’s topliner, the G1 World Sports Betting Cape Town Met (2000m). Remarkably, it was a third straight World Sports Betting Cape Town Met for trainer Justin Snaith and owner Nick Jonsson, with that combination having won the previous two Mets with Jet Dark and Double Superlative respectively. One of six winners on Saturday for Justin Snaith, Eight On Eighteen picked up the first G1 win of his success with a stunning display in Saturday’s R5 000 000 contest. Under a typically well judged ride by champion jockey Richard Fourie, the Lancaster Bomber colt became just the fourth sophomore in a quarter of a century to win the Met. The flashy bay powered home down the inside of the Hollywoodbets Kenilworth track to get up close home and win by half a length. It was a World Sports Betting Cape Town Met 1-2 finish for BSA, with 2024 G1 Hollywoodbets Durban July winner, and BSA buy, Oriental Charm finishing second. Bred by Drakenstein Stud, the 2025 World Sports Betting Cape Town Met winner was a R700 000 buy from the 2023 National Yearling Sale. A very close relative of former G1 Hollywoodbets Cape Guineas winner Snow Pilot, Eight On Eighteen, who won the G3 Langerman at two, is out of the Captain Al mare Sempre Libre, a full-sister to G2 KZN Guineas winner Secret Captain and half-sister to champions Bela-Bela and Rabiya. Eight On Eighteen, who races for Nick Jonsson and Johann Rupert, was one of two BSA sold thoroughbreds to win a G1 race at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Saturday.
Classy filly Rascova, whose Hawwaam half-sister comes up for sale on the February Online Sale, picked up her first G1 victory when she landed Saturday’s G1 Maine Chance Farms Majorca Stakes in courageous fashion. Under a great ride from Gavin Lerena, the Glen Kotzen trained four-year-old got up in the shadow of the post to win by a short-head. In the process, Rascova provided her owners, Sandy and Eugene Arundel, with their first G1 success. It was a 1-2-4 Majorca Stakes finish for Bloodstock South Africa, with BSA graduates Rascova, Double Grand Slam and Kinda Wonderful finishing first, second and fourth respectively. Bred by Cheveley Stud (also breeders of Met runner up Oriental Charm), Rascova, runner up in last year’s Majorca Stakes, has won six of 20 starts, with the filly also victorious in last season’s G2 World Sports Betting Fillies Guineas and G2 Western Cape Fillies Championship. By the same sire as Eight On Eighteen, Rascova, a R260 000 purchase from the 2022 Cape Yearling Sale, is out of the five time winning Western Winter mare Netsuke.
Mucho Dinero picked up his third black type win when he won Saturday’s G3 New Turf Carriers Western Cape Stayers over a smart field. The Justin Snaith trained five-year-old was given a fine ride by Aldo Domeyer, who brought his mount with a late challenge to score by a length and three quarters.Owned by Nick Jonsson, the Drakenstein Stud bred gelding has won seven of 20 starts, with his previous victories including the 2024 G2 Anthonij Rupert Wine Premier Trophy. His win on Saturday took Mucho Dinero’s earnings to over R1 000 000. A son of Twice Over and R1 400 000 buy from the 2021 National Yearling Sale, Mucho Dinero is one of five stakes winners produced by G3 Final Fling Stakes/Listed Ladies Mile winner Cash Register.
The Andre Nel trained Zeitz stamped his Derby claims when he ran out a ready winner of Saturday’s G3 City Of Cape Town Politician Stakes. Under a confident Serino Moodley, the progressive colt romped home to land Saturday’s R350 000 by an emphatic two and three quarter lengths. The Politician Stakes was another great result for star sire, and former National Sale graduate, Vercingetorix, with Vercingetorix sons Zeitz, Garrix and Native Ruler running first, second and third respectively. Bred by Maine Chance Farms, and owned by Sabine Plattner, Zeitz has won two of six starts and has earned R329 724 in stakes. The regally bred colt, whose winning Redoute’s Choice sired dam Zappy Choice hails from the immediate family of unbeaten Arc winner Zarkava, was a R625 000 purchase from the 2023 National Yearling Sale.
