The great season enjoyed by graduates of Bloodstock South Africa was acknowledged on Wednesday night’s Equus Awards ceremony.
Not only was BSA buy Captain’s Ransom named Horse Of The Year for 2021-2022, Bloodstock South Africa sold thoroughbreds claimed no fewer than nine awards (former National Sale buy Vercingetorix was named Equus Outstanding Stallion on the night to add gloss to BSA’s remarkable night).
However, it was the Moutonshoek bred Captain’s Ransom who was the star of Wednesday night’s show. The brilliant bay, a R225 000 buy from the 2019 National Yearling Sale, won six of her seven starts last season, with Captain’s Ransom’s four G1 victories in 2021-2022 including the G1 Cartier Paddock Stakes, G1 Schweppes Majorca Stakes, G1 South African Fillies Sprint and G1 Mercury Sprint.
Owned by Suzette Viljoen, the Justin Snaith trained Captain’s Ransom has won a total of 12 of her 15 starts for earnings of more than R3 000 000, and she is a true champion!
Fellow BSA graduate Jet Dark, one of three Equus Award winners for breeder Drakenstein Stud (who were named Outstanding Breeder and Champion Owner for the 2021-2022 South African racing season), was another equine star to shine on Wednesday night. The classy son of Trippi, who claimed both the G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate and G1 HKJC World Pool Champions Cup last season, was named Champion Older Colt/Gelding, Champion Miler and Champion Middle Distance Horse on Wednesday night. The classy bay, who was also second in both the G1 World Sports Betting Cape Town Met and G1 Hollywoodbets Durban July last season, was a R200 000 buy from the 2019 National Yearling Sale, with the Justin Snaith trained Jet Dark racing for Tommy Crowe and Nick Jonsson.
Other BSA graduates to claim Equus Award glory last night were Cousin Casey (Champion 2YO Colt), Canadian Summer (Champion 2YO Filly), and Safe Passage (Champion 3YO Colt/Gelding).
No doubt, more future Equus Award winners will be sold at this week’s August Two Year Old Sale, which takes place at the TBA complex on Friday and Saturday.
