The 2022 August Two Year Old Sale drew to a stirring conclusion at the TBA complex on Saturday afternoon, with results and prices from the two day auction all having exceeded all expectations.
Aggregate for this year’s sale rose to R48.975 million, off a base of R39.64 million recorded in 2021, and, just as pleasingly, both the average prices and median prices recorded notable gains in 2022.
This year’s August Two Year Old Sale recorded a handsome average of R220 608 with the 2021 average price R141 571, and the auction’s median increased from R90 000 in 2021 to R140 000 this year.
An exceptional catalogue, and consistently strong middle market, resulted in a very memorable August Two Year Old Sale indeed, and South Africa’s breeders are to be congratulated on the quality of horse they bought for sale at this year’s auction.
Varsfontein Stud’s champion sire Gimmethegreenlight, whose legendary sire More Than Ready died earlier this week, had a fantastic sale, with the Varsfontein resident not only supplying the sales’ top lot but also ending the August Sale as Leading Sire by Aggregate. In total, Gimmethegreenlight had eight lots gross R6.75 million, with Gimmethegreenlight yearlings averaging an impressive R843 750 at this year’s August Two Year Old Sale.
Gimmethegreenlight’s Wilgerbosdrift consigned colt Yes We Can was the top lot sold off this year’s sale, with that colt (Lot 91) knocked down to Form Bloodstock for R3 800 000. Yes We Can was one of three colts to fetch R1 000 000 or more at the August Sale, with Vercingetorix colt Holding Thumbs (Lot 156) and Silvano colt Groovejet making R1 100 000 and R1 000 000 respectively.
Wilgerbosdrift, whose young sire Fire Away also made a big impression at the sale, topped the Leading Vendors table at the August Two Year Old Sale, with Wilgerbosdrift selling 18 two-year-olds for a total of R9.18 million, while Form Bloodstock led the Buyers list, with Form purchasing five lots for R5.685 million.
