Regally bred colt Herero Secret, a full-brother to exciting filly Desert Miracle, was the top lot sold at the 2021 August Two Year Old Sale, which concluded on Saturday afternoon.
A colt by the Wilgbosdrift bred champion and oustanding sire Dynasty , Herero Secret (Lot 224) is a full-brother to the exciting filly Desert Miracle, whose two wins from four starts included a near eighth length romp in the G2 Zulu Kingdom Explorerer Golden Slipper.
The Wilgerbosdrift consigned colt (Lot 224) was knocked down to Form Bloodstock’s Jehan Malherbe for R1 200 000 to top the August Sale. Hereo Secret is out of the top-class racemare Welwitschia, whose seven career wins included triumphs in all of the G2 Diadem Stakes, G2 Camellia Stakes and G3 Joburg Spring F&M Challenge.
Drakenstein Stud’s prominent stallion What A Winter, South Africa’s Leading Sire of 2YOs for 2020-2021, was responsible for the top filly sold at the 2021 August Two Year Old Sale.
His daughter Maggie Smith (Lot291) was knocked down to trainer Wendy Whitehead for R850 000 making her the second top lot sold and top filly overall.
Consigned to the sale by Mauritzfonten, Maggie Smith is out of the three time winning New Approach mare Dame Eleanor, and her stakes winning granddam, Curtana, ranks as a full-sister to triple Australian G1 winner Flamberge.
Despite taking place in a tough economic climate, the August Two Year Old Sale proved a memorable one for all concerned.
While the sale’s aggregate dropped slightly, from R39.715 million to R39.34 million (while offering a smaller catalogue),the sale did post increases in both the average and median price.
The average for the August Two Year Old Sale rose from R122 957 to R143 054, while the median increased from R70 000 to R90 000.
Wilgerbosdrift, who consigned the top lot, were the auction’s top vendors, selling 19 of their 20 lots for R6.715 million, while Form Bloodstock led the buyers list, purchasing 14 two-year-olds for R4.63 million.
Exciting young stallions The United States and Rafeef dominated the August Two Year Old Sale ring, with The United States heading the Leading Sires by Aggregate list. The son of Galileo, whose offspring were keenly sought after throughout the two day auction, had 22 lots gross R4.435 million, with Al Khayl Breeders spending R700 000 to purchase The United States colt Kashkaval (Lot43) on the first day of the sale.
