Varsfontein Stud, breeders of reigning Equus Champions Bless My Stars and Sandringham Summit among many others, are very excited to be offering yearlings by their new homebred sire Erik The Red in 2024.
The latter, who is from the same family as successful Varsfontein bred and based stallion Master Of My Fate, was a top-class performer whose six wins, from ten starts, included the 2020 G2 Cape Thoroughbred Sales Cape Merchants and four other black type races.
A son of outstanding sire Captain Al and the Western Winter sired G1 Majorca Stakes winner Covenant, Erik The Red, who hails from the same family as the Captain Al sired Triple Crown winning sire Malmoos, has plenty to recommend him as a stallion prospect.
Varsfontein Stud will be offering 14 yearlings by this exciting young sire at the upcoming Cape Yearling Sale, as well as yearlings by the likes of Erik The Red’s close relative Master Of My Fate and current leading first season sire One World, with the latter, like Erik The Red, a son of Captain Al.
The farm highlighted the following lots as potential standouts:
Lot 15 Polymath, colt by Erik The Red out of Aunt Polly (Gimmethegreenlight): This colt has impressed us since he was a foal. He is a good size, is leggy and stands over ground but with more than enough constitution. He has good rein and is a free striding horse with a handsome look.
Lot 20 Black Erika, filly by Erik The Red out of Black Flame (Silvano): Aptly named, this jet black filly catches the eye with her racy, athletic frame. She is medium in size, covers ground, is deep through the girth with a lovely hindquarter and a classy look. This female line has proven to be a successful nick to Captain Al in Fragrant Al and Captain’s Flame.
Lot 36 Polar Light, filly by Erik The Red out of Different Light (Gimmethegreenlight): This filly is a powerhouse with a strong, athletic walk. She has a precocious look to her. Her frame is compact and muscular and she has furnished into a beautiful filly.
Lot 62 Ask Andre, filly by One World out of Hidden Secret (Caesour): This medium size, well balanced filly boasts a powerful shoulder and a lovely hindquarter. With a quality head and a lovely temperament, she is a pleasure to look at. Her grand dam is the great Secret Pact so she has a female line that is hard to match on this sale.
Lot 68 North Star, filly by Erik The Red out of In The Stars (Master Of My Fate): She is a medium to good size filly, has a muscular, strong build but also plenty of scope. She is well topped and is typical of her grandsire, Captain Al. Yet another filly with plenty of depth to her pedigree.
Lot 72 Tenjiku, colt by Erik The Red out of Kawakami (Master Of My Fate): He is another colt that has held our attention from the beginning. This medium size, well-made colt, has a big, strong shoulder and a good forearm. He is deep through the girth and is a handsome colt with an easy temperament to match.
Lot 75 Kissing Kin, filly By Erik The Red out of Kissaway (Gimmethegrenlight): This striking grey filly certainly catches the eye. She is beautifully put together with a deep girth and powerful hindquarter. A substantial, impressive looking filly.
Lot 145 Red Taffety, filly by Erik The Red out of Taffety Tart (Trippi): This good size filly is leggy and stands over ground. She has a racy look with a good walk and is beautifully put together. The Trippi influence can be seen through her class and quality.
