Piketberg based farm Moutonshoek are responsible for breeding one of the most brilliant fillies to grace the South African turf in many a year.
The Moutonshoek bred Captain’s Ransom, herself a former National Sale graduate, had a superb season in 2021 – 2022, with the flashy bay winning six of her seven starts last season, including the G1 Cartier Paddock Stakes, G1 Schweppes Majorca Stakes, G1 South African Fillies Sprint and G1 Mercury Sprint. The latter win was particularly impressive, with Captain’s Ransom powering home late on to down male rivals and land one of South Africa’s top sprints.
In total, Captain’s Ransom has won 12 of just 15 starts, earned more than R3 000 000 in prize money, and she has triumphed in no fewer than six G1 races, including the 2020 G1 WSB Cape Fillies Guineas and 2021 G1 Majorca Stakes.
Moutonshoek will be offering buyers the chance to buy their own Captain’s Ransom at the 2022 August Two Year Old Sale, where the farm will be offering two-year-olds sired by both July winner Pomodoro and their own exciting resident sire The United States.
The latter, whose two small first crops have yielded the likes of Sheela, Sun Blushed and impressive debut winner Rockets Red Glare, has seven lots on offer in this draft. They include a filly (Lot 149) from the immediate family of star siblings Marinaresco and Marina, as well as a half-sister (Lot 268) to Listed Dahlia Plate winner Joking.
Moutonshoek’s draft for this year’s August Two Year Old Sale can be viewed in Block E at the TBA complex in Germiston.
