This season’s star three-year-old filly Frances Ethel is a wonderful advertisement for the quality of thoroughbred that Mauritzfontein annually brings to the KZN Yearling Sale. Knocked down to Central Route Trading for R160 000 at the 2022 KZN Yearling Sale, the daughter of Rafeef, who contests Saturday’s G1 Tabgold Woolavington 2000, has won four of five starts thus far and showed her class when romping home to win the G2 Wilgerbosdrift Bridget Oppenheimer SA Oaks earlier this season.
Mauritzfontein will be bringing another top-class consignment to this year’s KZN Yearling Sale, with this string made up of yearlings sired by resident stallions Danon Platina and Ideal World, as well as thoroughbreds sired by both Hawwaam and What A Winter.
The latter, whose current flagbearers include the likes of Asiye Phambili, Mid Winter Wind, and Winter Cloud, is represented here by Holds The Key (Lot 25), a half-brother to this season’s G3 TAB J J The Jet Plane Stakes victor Mover And Shaker and out of a six time winning daughter of Silvano.
Japanese champion Danon Platina has two well bred colts on offer in the form of Christmas Cactus (Lot 50) and Eastern Highlands (Lot 147). The former is a colt whose granddam is a winning half-sister to G1 Awesome Again Stakes winner Mubtaahij and G1 Prix de l’Opera heroine Lily Of The Valley, while Eastern Highlands, who hails from the same female line as 2024 G1 Qipco 2000 Guineas winner Notable Speech, is out of a three time winning Silvano half-sister to dual Guineas winner and sire Noordhoek Flyer.
Deepest Water (Lot 26) is a filly from the first crop of champion Hawwaam and she is out of a three time winning daughter of Western Winter, while Ideal World’s trio of yearlings on offer include Pembury (Lot 55), a colt whose G3 placed dam is a half-sister to graded stakes winning two-year-olds Olympic Owen and Speedy Suzy, and Alannah (Lot 138). The latter is a filly out of a twice winning Silvano full-sister to G3 Final Fling Stakes and Listed Ladies Mile/Listed Lady’s Bracelet victress Platinum Class.
