One of South Africa’s leading thoroughbred nurseries, Mauritzfontein, will be offering a high quality consignment at this year’s Cape Yearling Sale.
Mauritzfontein, whose recent list of star graduates include the likes of Celtic Sea, Marinaresco and Summer Pudding, will be offering yearlings sired by all of Canford Cliffs, Erupt, Flower Alley, Ideal World, Rafeef, Twice Over and What A Winter.
Irish classic winner Canford Cliffs, who won five G1 races in a row, is represented here by Jack Ryan (Lot 33), a colt whose granddam is none other than Irish Oaks winner Vintage Tipple, while Exhale (Lot 132), the only member of Dubawi’s dual G1 winning son Erupt in this draft, is a son of the stakes placed Fort Wood mare Withbatedbreath, and this well-bred colt’s dam is very closely related to champion and red hot sire Elusive Fort.
Turkish Kelim (Lot 69), a filly by the hugely exciting young sire Rafeef, is a daughter of Syringa Handicap winner Persian Rug, while champion sprinter What A Winter’s sole representative here is Tulip Tree (Lot 157) -a filly whose Fastnet Rock sired dam is a half-sister to the top-class filly Venus De Milo, runner up in both the Irish and Yorkshire Oaks.
Mauritzfontein’s consistently successful resident stallion Ideal World, whose son Rainbow Bridge recently won the Met for a second time, has a single lot on offer -I’ve Got Wings (Lot 164) is a filly out of a three-parts sister to the dam of Golden Slipper winner Desert Rhythm, while champion Twice Over, the sire of dual Vodacom Durban July winner Do It Again, is the sire of Tons Of Fun (Lot 137) a filly from the family of Epsom Derby runner up Glacial Storm.
Two other well related lots in Mauritzfontein’s draft are Otto Luyken (Lot 36), a Flower Alley colt out of a half-sister to the dam of reigning Horse Of The Year Summer Pudding, and Spring Squill (Lot 167). The latter is a Flower Alley half-sister to Wolf Power 1600 hero Irish Pride, with this filly’s dam closely related to both former Horse Of The Year Celtic Grove as well as to the stakes placed dam July winning champion Marinaresco.
