Not for the first time in recent years, a Silvano colt proved the star attraction on the first day of the National Yearling Sale, which commenced at Germiston on Thursday.

Consigned to the sale by Maine Chance Farms, Silvano colt Power Factor (Lot 191) topped day one of the National Sale when knocked down to the Hong Kong Jockey Club for R2 400 000 at Thursday’s sale.

The regally bred colt, whose sire is one shy of having 100 stakes winners to his name, is out of the Captain Al sired G2 Sceptre Stakes/Listed East Cape Fillies Nursery heroine Princess Royal -whose daughter Princess Calla captured both the G2 Western Cape Fillies Championship and G3 Umzimkhulu Stakes this season.

The blue blooded Princess Royal, who hails from the same family as former champion South African sire Jallad, is herself a three-parts sister to dual Equus Champion, and four time G1 winner, Princess Victoria.

Five times South African champion sire Silvano also provided Thursday’s top priced filly, when his daughter October Fair (Lot 133) was knocked down to Pieter Graaff’s Lammerskraal Stud for R1 100 000. The blue blooded filly was consigned to the sale by Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm.

A half-sister to G1 Golden Horse Medallion winner and Equus Champion Tempting Fate, October Fair (whose talented half-sister Spring Break is also owned by Lammerskraal), is out of G3 Tommy Hotspur Handicap victress Miss October -a full-sister to G1 Mercury Sprint victor August Rush.

Thursday’s session achieved an aggregate of R47.225 million -with the average price settling at R262 361 and a median of R200 000.
