Progressive three-year-old Smorgasbord, a R460 000 buy from the 2020 National Yearling Sale, showed his class when downing some high-class older rivals to land Saturday’s G2 Senor Santa Stakes (1160m) in convincing fashion.
Under Warren Kennedy, the Paul Peter trained gelding ran on powerfully in the closing stages of Saturday’s sprint to account for 2020 G1 Golden Horse Sprint winner Warrior’s Rest by half a length, with G1 Allan Robertson Championship heroine Under Your Spell another half length further back in third.
Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, Smorgasbord races for the Wernars family.
Runner up in last season’s G2 4Racing SA Nursery, Smorgasbord has now three of just eight starts and he is yet to finish out of the first four.
The gelding is another high-class three-year-old representing his sire Twice Over, who has five lots on offer at the upcoming National Yearling Sale. Twice Over is also responsible for this season’s G1 Cape Guineas winner Double Superlative as well as the likes of fellow stakes winning three-year-olds Call The Wind and Resonate.
Out of the three time winning Var mare Variety, Smorgasbord is a half-brother to three winners including ill-fated G3 Graham Beck Stakes winner, and fellow BSA graduate, Zen Arcade.
