The Southford Stud will be bringing a small but smart string to this year’s KZN Yearling Sale. David Southey will be bringing four yearlings to the Durban sale in 2024, with all four horses sired by a Grade One winner.
Admiral Kitten, a G1 Secretariat Stakes winning son of multiple champion sire Kitten’s Joy, has three lots in this draft.
Super Miss (Lot 42), whose dam is a winning Captain Al half-sister to the smart sprinter Cedar, is a half-sister to five winners headed by G3 Poinsettia Stakes third placegetter Captain’s Girl and the six time winner Captain’s Diva. Further back, this is the family of G1 OK Gold Bowl winner Proud Pilgrim as well as Listed Gardenia Handicap victress The Eden Project.
Admiral Kitten is also sire of Russell Square (Lot 118), a half-brother to seven time winner Trafalgar Square, and Gunboat (Lot 176). The latter is a colt whose dam is a winning own sister to the stakes placed dam of flying G2 4Racing SA Nursery winner Sheela and also a three-parts sister to Mauritian star White River.
Gunboat hails from one of the best families in the stud book, with his relatives also including such G1 winners as Byword, Continent, Midships, Proviso, Temida, and Zambezi Sun. Ill-fated G1 Cazoo Derby winner Desert Crown is another top-class member of this family.
Western Winter’s G1 Mercury Sprint winning son Red Ray, sire of G1 WSB SA Classic hero Red Saxon among others, is another top-class performer represented in the Southford draft. He is the sire of On Song (Lot 160), a half-sister to two winners, one of whom won four. On Song, in turn, is out of Queens Music, a four time winning daughter of Fort Wood and Listed Bauhinia Handicap queen Sovereign Beat.
This quartet can be viewed from Block C at the Suncoast Casino in Durban.
