The Riethuiskraal Stud made headlines earlier this season when the Riethuiskraal bred Flying Carpet downed some of Gauteng’s top gallopers to win the 2021 World Sports Betting Presents The Gauteng Summer Cup.
In the process, the Sean Tarry trained four-year-old, a R15 000 bargain buy from the 2019 KZN Yearling Sale, took his earnings to over R1 million.
Flying Carpet, however, is by no means the first Summer Cup winner bred by Advocate Altus Joubert’s Riethuiskraal Stud.
In 2010, the Riethuiskraal bred Flirtation downed a star-studded field to land the G1 Sansui Summer Cup for Mike de Kock and Randall Simons, and that daughter of Silvano ended her racing career having earned in excess of R2.1 million in prize money.
Other standouts bred by Riethuiskraal include Crimson Palace, a G1 winner in both South Africa and North America, and former joint South African Horse Of The Year National Colour. The latter, a three time G1 winner in South Africa who went on to finish second in Britain’s prestigious G1 Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes, went on to become an outstanding broodmare, with National Colour’s progeny headed by champion Mustaaqeem and G1 winner, and now leading sire, Rafeef.
Recent flagbearers for Riethuiskraal include the aforementioned Flying Carpet, and such graded stakes winning fillies as Anna Capri and Vistula.
The farm is situated 15 km from the coastal town of Stilbaai, nestled against the Goukou River estuary. Established back in 1834, Riethuiskraal, as its record confirms, provides the perfect setting for the care and conditioning of thoroughbreds.
This highly successful farm will be offering a large and impressive string at this year’s National Yearling Sale, with the farm’s draft made up of yearlings sired by the likes of Captain Of All, Danon Platina, Duke Of Marmalade, Flower Alley, Ideal World, Lancaster Bomber, Potala Palace, and the red hot Vercingetorix.
Potential stars in this consignment include a Vercingetorix colt (Lot 113) whose dam is a half-sister to the aforementioned National Colour, a Lancaster Bomber colt (Lot 196) out of G2 The Fillies Nursery winner State Factor, a Vercingetorix half-brother (Lot 239) to G2 Joburg Spring F&M Challenge winner Vistula, and a Danon Platina colt (Lot 299) out of the speedy, stakes placed winner of five, Bellotto Flash.
This draft can be found in Block B in the TBA complex in Germiston, and can be viewed in the days leading up towards the 2022 National Sale.
