Purchased by the Oppenheimer’s in 1945, Mauritzfontein has long been regarded as one of South Africa’s top stud farms. Among the numerous champions bred and raised at Mauritzfontein are Horse Chestnut, Bodrum, Celtic Sea, Cherry On The Top and Summer Pudding. The latter was South Africa’s Horse Of The Year in 2019-2020, with Summer Pudding winning 11 of 13 starts including the Wilgerbosdrift Triple Tiara of 2020 as well as the 2020 G1 World Sports Betting Gauteng Summer Cup.
The farm will be bringing a high-class draft to the upcoming KZN Yearling Sale, where Mauritzfontein will be offering yearlings sired by the likes of Danon Platina, Fire Away, Flower Alley, Ideal World, The United States and the ever popular What A Winter.
The latter, whose flagbearers this season include G1 Jonsson Workwear Computaform Sprint winner Isivunguvungu, is represented in this draft by a filly (Lot 35) whose dam won three and whose granddam is a stakes placed daughter of champion sprinter Oasis Dream.
The classy Mover And Shaker, winner of the 2022 Bloodstock SA Sales Cup (C&G), has an Ideal World half-brother (Lot 69) on sale by the name of Twilight Warrior, with Ideal World also the sire of Another Universe (Lot 93), a full-brother to Listed Wolf Power 1600 victor Irish Pride, and Meritorious (Lot 166). The latter, also closely related to the Ideal World sired G3 Graham Beck Stakes winner Zen Arcade, is a full-sister to G3 Track And Ball Derby winner Cape Speed as well as to the dam of Listed Derby Trial winner Pamushana’s Pride.
Resident sire Danon Platina, currently one of the most exciting young stallions standing at stud in South Africa, has five lots on offer here. They include Seventh Fleet (Lot 37), a full-brother to the promising Unconquerable Lady, To Be Free (Lot 136), a half-sister to the classy performer Spring Fling, and Grey Fantacy (Lot 146). The latter is a filly hailing from one of the best families in the South African studbook, with Grey Fantacy’s relatives including champions London News and Promisefrommyheart, top sire Master Of My Fate and Triple Crown winning sire Malmoos to name but a few!
Fire Alarm (Lot 78), a filly by the very promising Fire Away, hails from the family of Cape Guineas winner Cape Alert and legendary sprinter Senor Santa, while Sacred Soil (Lot 57), by sire of the moment The United States, is a colt whose relatives include none other than Epsom Derby runner up Glacial Storm.
