The South African racing and breeding industry lost a much loved member following the recent passing of Jane Thomas.
Jane, who was 61 at the time of her passing, had fought a valiant battle against cancer and she will be sorely missed.
The proud proprietor of her much-loved Far End Farm in Mooi River, Jane will be remembered for her love of horses and strong work ethics.
Jane took out an open trainer’s license, training off her Far End Farm in Mooi River from 1990 – 2000, before shifting her focus back to pre-training. Thus the Far End we know today was born 24 years ago.
Born in England, Jane packed her bags at the age of 23 and set off on an adventure that would see her end up in Mooi River.
She used 400 acres of her 1100 acre sprawl of paradise for the 120 odd horses that she prepared. The balance of the farm was leased to a local dairy farmer. She also did the groundwork for the Ready To Run sales. She did sterling work for Bloodstock South Africa, inspecting yearlings across South Africa for BSA’s yearling auctions, with Jane having a rare eye and understanding for the thoroughbred.
She will long be remembered for work for Fred Crabbia, while Jane, Dean Kannemeyer and Jehan Malherbe were a feature of Bloodstock South African sales for decades.
Jane leaves behind her sons Luke and Mzo.
