Wilgerbosdrift, one of the top thoroughbred nurseries in South Africa, is a farm with a relatively short but impressive background.
Established by Mary Slack in 2000, Wilgerbosdrift has already bred a long list of champions, headed by former Horse Of The Year and outstanding sire Dynasty. (Among Dynasty’s numerous high-class offspring are the Wilgerbosdrift bred and owned high-class filly Desert Miracle, as well as such promising stallion sons as Act Of War, Futura, Horizon and Legislate).
Wilgerbosdrift bred another champion son of Fort Wood in the form of Elusive Fort -the sire of, among others, current boom galloper Kommetdieding.
Current equine flagbearers for Wilgerbosdrift include reigning Horse Of The Year Rainbow Bridge (sadly now retired), brilliant filly Desert Miracle and G2 Durban Golden Horseshoe/G3 Byerley Turk winner Waterberry Lane.
The Piketberg farm, managed most ably by Gail Bulpitt and Shane Van Zyl who consult Jehan Malherbe for mating advice and bloodstock purchases, is famed for the strength of its broodmare band, and also stands an impressive band of stallions.
Stallions currently standing at Wilgerbosdrift include the well established Flower Alley, the Wilgerbosdrift bred champion Hawwaam, and well bred young stallions Buffalo Bill Cody and Fire Away.
However, perhaps the standout performer at Wilgerbosdrift is legendary broodmare Halfway To Heaven, who produced three G1 winners from her first three foals!
Wilgerbosdrift, who made history when their Masaki made R9 000 000 at the 2019 National Sale, will be offering another strong draft at this year’s National Yearling Sale. The draft includes yearlings by top stallions Master Of My Fate Querari, Rafeef, Silvano, and also includes a colt by Coolmore’s top-class sire No Nay Never.
The latter, a son of outstanding stallion Scat Daddy, is represented here by a colt (Lot 100) whose dam is a winning own sister to triple G1 winning champion Alboran Sea.
Other highlights in Wilgerbosdrift’s consignment include an Ideal World half-brother (Lot 249) to star filly Desert Miracle, and a Flower Alley half-sister (Lot 393) to brilliant recent G3 Byerley Turk winner Waterberry Lane.
However, the likely standout in this draft is the Fire Away colt (Lot 407) out of multiple Broodmare Of The Year Halfway To Heaven. Not only is the latter dam of reigning Horse Of The Year Rainbow Bridge, she is also dam of champion Hawwaam and dual G1 winner Golden Ducat. Clearly the sky is the limit for this colt!
